Port Location: Athens is a world renowned city and an important cruise destination and it is the Port of Piraeus that serves as the main entry to the city by sea.

Transport: The Greek transportation system is highly dependable and is something that many people comment on when they visit the country. It also provides an inexpensive way in which to travel around Athens and see the sights however your cruise company may offer a shuttle bus or, alternatively, you can take a taxi.

Description: The port itself has been in operation since about the 6th century BC where it became strategically important for both trade and military reasons.

Sightseeing and Excursions: The Port of Piraeus is the gateway to a whole host of historical and archaeological wonders. Probably the only thing you need to worry about is how you will fit everything in, in such a short space of time. The Parthenon at the Acropolis are generally the two sites that everyone comes to Athens to visit and, seeing as they are millennia old, they are still in very good condition and you can appreciate how they looked all those years ago.

The Theatre of Dionysos is a must see as will in the city and it really is a masterwork of ancient building and architecture. These are not the only sights to see however and the Temple of Zeus – which is slightly more out of the way – is also worth a visit however many people are happy to watch the world go by in one of the many café’s and bars that litter the streets.

Beaches: Greece as a whole is a popular beach holiday destination so it is little wonder that Athens is the same. Alimos beach is the busiest given its close proximity to the city however if you have an extra day then travel to Lagonisi which is about 40 minutes from the city.

Shopping: The Plaka District is the main shopping area in the town and you can find everything from chain stores to local shops in this bustling and busy area. However, if you fancy going off the beaten track then the Athens Flea market is a place to look for a bargain and also the location to try your haggling abilities at the same time.
