Port Location: The Port of Vigo is found in the north-west of the country and is the only major Spanish port on the western side. Located in the Galicia region of Spain that is wedged between the imposing mountains to the north and Portugal to the south, Vigo provides a good location to enter the country from its northern borders.

Description: The first thing you will notice about Vigo and the surrounding area is how ‘un-Spanish’ the climate is. ‘The Green Spain’ doesn’t really have any of the scorching, arid landscape that you associate with the south; instead the Galicia region has a much damper and cooler climate than the rest of the country and is often used by Spanish residents to achieve a respite from the long and torturously hot summer months.

A word of warning is the language as Vigo is not the most touristy of places and therefore English is only going to get you so far; learning simple phrases such as ‘hola’, ‘gracias’ and ‘habla usted Ingles?’ will go a long way in this city.

Sightseeing and Excursions: Just because it isn’t the most tourist orientated part of Spain doesn’t mean that there isn’t lots to see and do if you land in the Port of Vigo. If you are a seafood aficionado then the Calle de la Pescaderia is one of the best seafood markets in Europe and provides a varied selection of fresh and wonderful seafoods. The Old City as well is filled with centuries old Galician architecture and can take you back through the yearss – the Alameda Square is a good example of this.

If you want something slightly different than architecture and history then the Vigo zoo is one of the best in Spain and La Toja – about 40 miles from the city – has a great golf course and some brilliant forests for you to explore.

Beaches: The Playa de Bouzas is the nearest beach to the city centre and is hugely popular in the summer months.

Shopping: From the traditional basketworks of the Calle de los Cesteros to the more modern and massive Plaza Elíptica on the Plaza Francisco Fernández Del Riego, Vigo offers a enjoyable shopping experience for all.
